A Walk In The Park

It's The Journey And The Destination

It's The Journey And The Destination

We all know the saying, "It's not the destination … it's the journey." Well, last Sunday afternoon in Park City was a delightful mix of both! Another Mom and her son invited me and my sons to go see the new LEGO® exhibit at the Kimball Art Center ("The Art of the Brick"). Delighted to take a little break from Sunday afternoon homework, cello practice and yard work, we jumped at the chance.

We carpooled and parked at the lot by the skate park in City Park to avoid Park Silly Sunday Market traffic on Main Street. At first, the other Mom and I were in our fast-walking-let's-get-up-the-bike-path-and-to-the-Kimball-mode, but our boys had other plans. Much more in the spirit of seizing the day and taking time to smell the roses, next thing we knew they had roosted in a beautiful old maple along the edge of the bike path.

Next stop was an impromptu concert at the sound garden.

And then we ran into the Park Silly Sunday Market, with all of its wonderful sounds (live music), smells (hot dogs on the grill) and sights (a stilt man towering over us; the new 'dogs of bark city' sculptures created by local artists on display for the first time (see our article on this Friends of the Animals fundraiser in the upcoming winter issue of Park City Magazine;) and the colors of all of the handmade crafts and artwork from the vendors.

After what had already been an extraordinarily pleasant outing had we just left it at that, we entered the Kimball Art Center to see the cool and thought-provoking sculptures built completely out of LEGO®s by artist Nathan Sawaya.

All of the sculptures captured our imaginations and my son commented, "It's amazing that the artist can make so many sculptures that look fluid and curved and moving, out of something so square." And that's just how our day had gone. We started with a pretty straight and narrow plan, yet we ended up meandering fluidly and finding an even better adventure than we'd hoped. To end the spontaneous excursion, we continued up Main Street and made a trip to one of our favorite local haunts, Dolly's Bookstore, redeeming a cherished gift certificate from a birthday way back in July for a new Star Wars novel, and then ended the trip with ice cream for all at Cow's.

There is so much to enjoy in Park City on Sunday, or any day, from the cultural nourishment of a nationally-touring art exhibit right here in our own town, to the simple joys of tossing the Frisbee toward the sky along the bike path and sitting in the trees. Enjoy.

THE ART OF THE BRICK show is on display at the Kimball Art Center through November 15, 2009. A $3 per person donation is suggested. The Kimball is open weekdays from 10am to 5pm and weekends from noon - 5pm at 638 Park Avenue, Park City. kimballartcenter.org.

How refreshing that you're discovering the joy and leisure of this time of year (unlike all those antsy skiers watching the mountain cams for first snow). You don't have to see many Indian summers in the mountains to know the snow will be here soon enough. Enjoy this season while you can! Cheers, Greg
